Confident

Your body can do incredible things – as a dancer you know this better than anyone. But being a dancer can also make you insecure. You are constantly comparing yourself to other dancers and you are in a vicious circle that is difficult to get out of and that makes you very insecure.

On stage, a dancer always looks very confident. In daily life it often happens that a dancer is insecure and extremely critical of himself and then we are not even talking about perfectionism in this blog, that doesn't really help either.

Self-mockery

Every dancer on this globe sometimes suffers from some form of insecurity. Insecure about how you look, about your technique, about your personality. The list of uncertainties is quite long for many. Sometimes it's hard to see that insecurities are just part of life. A little uncertainty is normal, especially for dancers. But if you experience more than a few of the points below, it's good to read on for tips to shorten this list, especially if the level of uncertainty is getting in the way of achieving your goals and dreams:

  • You frequently make self-deprecating remarks about yourself
  • You worry about everything
  • You apologize for everything all the time.
  • You try to attract attention and lose your temper very easily.
  • You are a huge perfectionist and very self-sufficient
  • You are often jealous and compare yourself to other dancers all the time

Tackle uncertainty

There are ways to deal with this uncertainty. Here are a few ideas to boost your confidence:

1. Use your uncertainty to learn

When it comes to insecurity, most dancers want to hide those feelings as quickly as possible. But sometimes insecurity is exactly what pushes dancers to do more, work harder and perform better. While you don't want uncertainty to become an unhealthy focus in your life, it can also be useful to use as a tool for positive change.

If you see a classmate doing more pirouettes than you, choose to practice more. It can be a movement that is simply easier for other dancers to do well. But that doesn't mean you can't master it. It may just take more hard work, effort, and time to get there. Just go for it. And if it works out, and you have to have faith in that, it will certainly help you to overcome your insecurities.

2. Learn how to deal with uncertainty

Everyone sometimes feels insecure, but how you deal with this can be very different for each dancer. It is therefore important to develop skills for this so that uncertainty does not get the upper hand. One thing you can do if you feel insecure:

If you hear the little devil on your shoulder say that you really aren't good enough, shut him up right away. Just say it isn't, and say it out loud. In addition, you immediately call out the things you are good at, all your positive qualities, again. Often when you hear yourself say it you think faster, wait a minute, it's just like that :).

3. Stop judging and comparing

We can be our own worst enemies when it comes to judging and comparing. You are often much stricter with yourself than with another dancer. And the hugely unrealistic goals we set for ourselves, by comparing ourselves to other dancers, can therefore lead to insecurity. That is why it is also important to keep judgments and comparisons to a minimum. I talk about this in more detail in another blog.

Balance

When it comes to insecurities, it can have a major impact on a dancer's physical, mental and emotional health. That's why it's so important for dancers to take care of themselves. In addition to eating and sleeping well, I also regularly talk about Primary food.

Watch things dance outside for what makes you happy; Learning another language, taking a cooking course, going to the sauna, taking a yoga class, just to name a few things.

Doing something completely different offers an outlet to convert negative energy into positivity and that way you get more balance in your life and it also helps you further in your dancing.

A little uncertainty is fine, but when it starts to take over your life, with thoughts that are not based on reality at all, it can be useful to have a chat together. A free session can be the start of overcoming your insecurity.
